Intense Pulsed Light treatments have no known significant side effects. Occasionally, some people with sensitive skin experience temporary redness or changes in skin pigmentation.
Hundreds of thousands of people have taken courses of Intense Pulsed Light treatments for permanent hair reduction. It is a well established technology and, when given by a trained practitioner, very few people have any negative side-effects. Today, there are no known significant or permanent side-effects (aside from hair loss on the treated areas).
There are two temporary side-effects which can occur after a course of Intense Pulsed Light treatment:
In some cases, some redness can appear on treated area. This will disappear within a few hours (in rarer cases it may persist for a few days). For people with sensitive skin, it is recommended that you apply some soothing cream (such as aloe vera or an after-sun lotion) after each session. For extra sensitive skin, it is also recommended that you apply the smoothing cream for a few days prior to your appointment (but not within 12-24 hours of your appointment).
In very exceptional cases the treatment can cause hyper-pigmentation (darkening of the skin colour). For darker skin pigmentation (SPT V - Rarely burns, tans profusely to dark and SPT VI - Never burns, deeply pigmented), hypo-pigmentation (lightening of the skin colour) can occur very rarely and is temporary.
If you have the slightest concern about the risks of Intense Pulsed Light treatment, please ask one of our fully trained practitioners any questions you might have. We evaluate every client individually to assess whether there is a reason not to start a course of treatment and to ensure that it is both safe and suitable for you.
Upon undergoing treatment with DepiCool each client will be given a pre and post treatment care brochure detailing all the pre and post treatment guidance for a safe and effective course of IPL treatment.
