Precautions
You do not need to make any special preparations prior to starting a course of Intense Pulsed Light treatment. However, there are a few steps which should be taken to reduce the risk of irritation and maximise the effectiveness of the treatment.
Before you start a course of treatment, a practitioner will provide advice and be happy to answer any questions.
Avoid The Sun!
It is rigorously prohibited that you sunbathe or use artificial tanning method (UVA/UVB lamps or self-tanning cream) during the four weeks prior to any session and for four weeks following any session.
Avoid Self Tanning Products
This includes tinted products such as moisturisers: during the four weeks prior to any session and for four weeks following any session.
Leave Hair in Place
For four weeks before a treatment session, do not remove hair with tweezers, wax or other method that remove the root of the hair. Also avoid removing hair between one session and another during the whole treatment period. 1-2mm of hair length is ideal for treatment, so shaving a few days before can produce the best results. However, for the first session it is recommended to have enough length so the practitioner can see easily the thickness and colour of the hair.
Don’t Colour Hair
Do not die or colour hair in the area to be treated in the weeks before starting a course.
Do not use Anaesthetic Cream
It is highly recommended to not use any anaesthetic cream such as EMLA that could affect the sensitivity of the skin because it could affect your reaction to the treatment and unnecessarily increase the risk of irritation. IPL is not painful procedure, reactions range from painless to bearable irritation or a sensation of discomfort from the heat.
Do I need to do anything special after the treatment?
The simple answer is no! You do not need any specific care and you can continue your normal day-to-day activities. The only advice is:
- It is important to avoid sun exposure. If this is not possible, use a sun block cream or lotion (SPF of 30 or more).
- If you have easily irritable skin, it is recommended to apply a soothing lotion - such as aloe vera or after-sun - for a couple of days after each session.
- Do not use aggressive products on your skin for a couple of days after each sessions (alcoholic deodorants, very hot showers, etc.).
